Shows to watch if you keep rewatching Sex + The City & Gossip Girl

Hi guys! Since most of us are still in quarantine and watching a lot more TV than usual, I decided to make a list of what I’m watching. I found myself rewatching my favorites, Sex & The City, Gossip Girl, Friends and Gilmore Girls over and over so I set out and decided to expand my horizons and make a list of NEW TV (and the OG faves you might have forgotten about) because I know there are some friends out there that have the same taste in shows as me. I’m very weirdly particular about what I like to watch. There are almost no scary shows and no reality TV shows on here. Keep in mind nothing will replace the prerequisites (see below) but, if the prerequisite list also contains your favorites you’re bound to find something new you like here.

So here it is, the ultimate list of shows to watch if you keep rewatching Sex & The City and Gossip Girl:

The OG Classics:

the prerequisites to the rest. if you haven’t seen the following, watch these first and then come back:

  • Sex & The City

  • Gossip Girl

  • Friends

  • Gilmore Girls

  • The OC

  • Grey’s Anatomy

IF YOU’RE THINKING OF REWATCHINg SEX AND THE CITY TRY THESE instead

The Bold Type (9/10)

2020’s take on Sex & The City. My favorite show right now, I’m sad there’s not more seasons already!

Dollface (7/10)

This show is extremely quirky, the first episode really put me off but after that I got into the friendships in the show. Their LA lives are actually relatable.

Girls (9/10)

A little grungier and not as light hearted and Pinterest-esque as my usual taste, but an instant cult classic.

younger-liza-3.jpg

Younger (8/10)

Lizzie McGuire all grown up with a twist. If you have anxiety this is the show to watch for some reason. I’ve heard other people say this show also helps take their minds off their anxiety too. Hilary Duff will always bring me back to 13 year old days with no big girl real life problems yet.

IF YOU’RE THINKING OF REWATCHINg GOSSIP GIRL TRY THESE instead

HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA TAKEN A LITTLE FAR

(the below are in the suspense category, so think gossip girl vibes with murder mystery twists)

Liars_Attend_A_Funeral.jpg

Pretty Little Liars (8/10)

I have a confession, I started watching this years ago but never finished because I got too scared to watch it alone. Now that we’re in quarantine, I think this will be my next binger. And I know this isn’t new, but it’s not quite in the classics list.

Riverdale (7/10)

Archie comics come to life with a dark side. Instant couple crush on Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart. I haven’t kept up to date on this show because my bf watched a few episodes with out me (ha) and you need to watch in order since a lot happens in each episode.

IF YOU’RE THINKING OF REWATCHING GILMORE GIRLS TRY THESe instead

feel good, family dynamics, coming of age, witty & quirky

Gilmore Girls is in a category of its own, serving all the feel good cozy fall vibes through a tv show, just like a pumpkin spice latte does (if you like those, I prefer hot apple cider) so there really isn’t a show that is on that can compete on that level, but these can be put in the same category.

Never Have I Ever (9/10)

I wasn’t sure I would like this because it seemed aimed at Gen Z Tik Tokers but once I began watching I fell in love. Coming of age story. Mom and daughter relationship. It has heart. Starts out light but I unexpectedly balled my eyes out on the last episode. Fully of Mindy Kaling’s signature sass.

Atypical (8/10)

A sweet, authentic family show centered around a 19 year old boy with autism. Will make you laugh. :)

Sex-Education-Season-2-Netflix-1-1.jpg

Sex Education (9/10)

Smart. British. Coming of age and figuring out coming of age things. You fall in love with the characters. Cannot wait for season 3!

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (10/10)

When I was watching this I instantly fell in love with the witty writing. Come to find out, it was created by the same person who created our OG love its self, Gilmore Girls! Thanks Amy Sherman-Palladino! Takes place in the 50’s about a woman comedian with the charming quick wit of Lorelai Gilmore.

IF YOU’RE THINKING OF REWATCHING FRIENDS TRY THESE instead

quirky comedy

I still haven’t found anything in the world that will replace the Friends size void in my heart since it left Netflix (so if you know of anything do tell in the comments), But these quirky comedies will get you laughing.

Schitt’s Creek (10/10)

My good friend’s mom introduced this show to me. At first I had no idea what I was watching but then I ended up finishing most of the first season in one night. The only show I’ve ever bought merch from. One of those shows you don’t have to watch in order but when you do, the heart really shines through. A good one to watch with your fam.

Broad City (7.5/10)

Bestie shenanigans in NYC. I had to stop watching this for a little because it got a bit much, and well a little too gross…? for daily consumption, but I pop this on when I want an easy laugh.

IF YOU’re thinking of REWATCHINg the oc TRY THiS instead

teenage drama

5eaf7a761a688.image.jpg

Outer Banks (6/10)

Kind of cringe acting and storyline all around, but for some reason I’m adding this to the list because it really sucked me in. There are surfer boys with their shirts off. Maybe that’s why. Super action packed, I had to walk away for a few scenes because it was way too violent for me. OC-ish vibes, a treasure hunt story line because why not, not really any cute witty commentary but you might be able to get your bf to watch it with you. Maybe season two will have a little more character development.

IF YOU’re thinking of REWATCHINg GREY’S ANATOMY TRY THESE instead

drama llama all the way

If you’re in the mood for something a little darker and to change up the usual light hearted, witty Carrie Bradshaw commentary, these will spice up your life and get you really sucked into a binge hole with some thrill + suspense.

Big Little Lies (10/10)

Bad ass moms on a mission, drama, crime / murder mystery. Insane cast: Reece Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz and Meryl Streep in the second season. Beautifully shot in stunning Monterey.

Dead To Me (9/10)

Murder mystery with some twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Fun fact when I was watching this Cristina Applegate held the door for me and we watched the same dance class.

little-fires-everywhere-ending.jpg

Little Fires Everywhere (8/10)

Small town drama, set in the 90’s, eerie mystery. Reece Witherspoon + Kerry Washington.

rs_1024x759-190709153016-1024x759.stranger-things-eleven-black-shirt-lp.7919.jpg

Stranger Things (10/10)

I didn’t know what category to put this in because it is unlike anything I would ever watch on my own but it’s so good if you haven’t seen it yet for some reason, just watch it. Even if it’s just for Dacre Montgomery 😉. 80’s vibes, The Goonies, science fiction-y.

YOU (10/10)

Dan Humphrey 10 years later turned stalker / serial killer. I recommend this with a HUGE warning. This is a truly scary show. Not suspenseful like the ones above, but truly messed up. Couldn’t sleep for weeks. The second season takes place in LA and really hits on all the little things that make LA, LA. So living there was creeping me out after watching it. Took about a month to feel better. But with that said, they did an amazing job making this show.

Tell me your favorite shows in the comments and if I watch them and love them I’ll update this list. :)
